Express delivery is a major component of modern economic activity, and its rapid development is driven by a large number of emerging industries in China, primarily e-commerce. Today, to meet the needs of the times, the express delivery industry is not only expanding in scale but also undergoing technological transformation towards intelligence.
The daily volume of express delivery nationwide has reached 13 million pieces, ranking third globally in market size. The overall growth rate of the industry is astonishing, exceeding 25%, demonstrating strong vitality. As the express delivery service industry plays an increasingly significant role in promoting economic development, facilitating social interaction, meeting the diverse delivery needs of consumers and businesses, and expanding employment, its importance is increasingly recognized.
2013 was a significant year for the express delivery industry. On the one hand, the scale of services continued to expand, and service efficiency improved, undoubtedly making 2013 another successful year. On the other hand, the industry also faced rising transportation costs due to labor and fuel prices, as well as issues such as security loopholes, violent handling, and customer information leaks. Failure to effectively address these issues could lead to potential crises in 2013. Under these circumstances, developing intelligent logistics has become a crucial choice for companies in the industry.
The State Council's "Logistics Industry Adjustment and Revitalization Plan" proposed actively promoting the informatization of enterprise logistics management and promoting the widespread application of information technology; actively developing and utilizing new technologies in the transportation field such as the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), Geographic Information System (GIS), Vehicle Information and Communication System (VICS), Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system, and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), and strengthening research on the security system of logistics information systems. Two years later, in August 2011, the "Opinions of the General Office of the State Council on Promoting the Healthy Development of the Logistics Industry" continued to emphasize strengthening the independent research and development of new logistics technologies, focusing on supporting key technological breakthroughs in cargo tracking and location, radio frequency identification, logistics information platforms, intelligent transportation, logistics management software, and mobile logistics information services. The application of the Internet of Things in the logistics field was also to be launched in a timely manner. Both policies emphasized, from a national macro perspective, the role of key information technologies such as geographic information systems in logistics informatization.
The construction of intelligent logistics will accelerate the development of the local logistics industry, integrating warehousing, transportation, distribution, and information services into a multi-functional entity. This will break down industry barriers, coordinate departmental interests, achieve efficient and intensive operations, and optimize the allocation of social logistics resources. Simultaneously, it will integrate logistics enterprises, centralizing previously dispersed logistics resources to leverage overall and scale advantages, and achieve the modernization, professionalization, and complementarity of traditional logistics enterprises. Furthermore, these enterprises can share infrastructure, supporting services, and information, reducing operating costs and expenses, and achieving economies of scale.
During the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" period, the domestic logistics industry will enter a higher level of development, with the industry scale continuing to expand rapidly, the industry concentration further increasing, the division of labor becoming increasingly refined, and the market order and environmental conditions further optimized. According to the national "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" for economic development, GDP growth will remain around 8% in the coming years, meaning that the express delivery market will continue to maintain a growth rate of at least 20% in the next few years. The development prospects are very broad, and the continued maturity of e-commerce will further accelerate the development of the express delivery industry.
